Our optometrists then use these test results to establish the best eye care plan for your specific needs.

What To Expect During An Eye Exam

During an eye exam, the optometrists at Broome Optical provide vision evaluations, prescriptions for contact lenses, diagnoses for common eye problems, and treatments for specific eye diseases or disorders. Your eye doctor will ask questions about your vision history, family and personal medical history as well as social history. The answers to these questions help the eye doctor understand your risk of eye disease and vision issues. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them to your eye care appointment so we can determine if your current vision prescription is still appropriate.

During an eye exam, tests that require dye or fluorescein to temporarily color eyes can permanently discolor contacts, so be prepared to take out your contact lenses during your eye exam. Also, expect to remove your eyeglasses.

If your optometrist finds you in need of glasses or contact lenses after an eye exam, we can fit you for appropriate eyewear then and there.

When And How Often Should You Get An Eye Exam?

Overall health, age and a potential for developing eye disorders all lay a role in determining how often an individual needs to get an eye exam. General guidelines for eye exams are:

Children ages 5 and younger: Pediatricians check children ages 3 and younger for common eye issues (crossed, turned out or lazy eyes). Eye doctors recommend children receive their first eye exams between the ages of 3 and 5.

School-age children and teenagers: If a school does not require an eye exam prior to the beginning of first grade, it is still best practice to have one completed. Children and teens should have vision checkups annually.

Adults: Because of strain constant computer and smartphone use puts on the eyes, we suggest adults be examined each year in order to deal with small vision issues before they become blurry issues. For patients over 40, an eye doctor will assess not only vision but also eye health changes due to age.
