HOW SHOULD I USE THE REST OF MY HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNT FUNDS ?
Dr. Jim Martin 11/19/2014
Health Savings Accounts are a great way to be prepared in case a serious medical issue arises, but each year thousands of users are forced to either use their money or forfeit it as the new calendar year begins. For those with an HSA account, your best option is to use your remaining money on medical procedures that will carry you through the next calendar year. So, what should you use your HSA funds for?
If you haven't gotten a new pair of glasses in the last 12 months, or even if you have one pair you still think work fine, you can use your HSA funds on a new pair of glasses, or on a backup pair for your current eyewear. If you easily lose glasses or damage them, or dependent upon your glasses for your everyday needs, grabbing a second pair with your leftover HSA funds is a smart decision. If you have yet to visit the eye doctor this year, now is the time to do it.
Most health savings accounts will allow you to utilize your funds for contact lenses at your doctor's office. Purchase several months worth to last you a while.
You can also purchase prescription sunglasses with your HSA account. If you enjoy the outdoors or your work has you outside a lot, prescription sunglasses are a great solution to the sun's harmful rays.
